In Isiama Afara Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was born on September 25, 1967. He is a British-Nigerian political activist who supports Biafra’s separation from Nigeria and independence.
Biafra is a territory of the predominantly Igbo-populated Eastern Region of Nigeria. The secessionist state of Biafra, officially known as the Republic of Biafra existed in West Africa from 1967 to 1970 and declared independence from Nigeria.
After many years of war, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu founded the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The main goal of IPOB is to restore the separatist state of Biafra, which existed in Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War of 1976-1970. He was arrested in Lagos, Nigeria, on October 14, 2015, for treason charges and released on bail on April 28, 2017. After jumping bail and fleeing abroad, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was arrested by Interpol and handed over to Nigeria in June 2021.
The activism activities of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu involve advocating for the freedom of Biafra as a Radio Biafra director and anchor of Biafra Awareness. The defunct Biafran government established Radio Biafra in 1967 to champion the Biafran cause.
