What Is Self-Determination and Why Is It Important?

Self-determination is one of the most basic human rights. It is the right of a sovereign people to freely determine their political status and freely pursue economic, social, and cultural development. Sadly, citizens in countries suffering from war, genocide, and countless human rights violations do not have the opportunity to enjoy such human rights. For example, because the Nigeria government sponsors Boko Haram, people in Biafra are suffering at the hands of terrorists and cannot freely express their economic, social, and cultural views without persecution.

Lobbying for the right to self-determination and other human rights in Biafra can help its people freely and independently dispose of their natural wealth and resources, determine their culture, and uplift the citizens from poverty.
