Nigeria is a cosmopolitan metropolis; comprising multi-ethnic peoples with divergent and contradictory social, cultural, religious, and linguistic differences, having little or nothing in common. While the South is predominantly Christian, the North is overwhelmingly Moslems.
The Northern and Southern protectorates were forcefully amalgamated together in 1914 by the British colonial government specifically for the British economic and commercial interests.
Whereas the South embraced the colonial/Western religion and education, the North vehemently rejected both. Hence, the name Boko Haram, meaning, Western education is forbidden, has remained a common practice in the North to date.
Surprisingly, the British imperialist government, beyond any stretch of the imagination, found it convenient to hand over the political power and control to the North at independence in 1960. Since then, the contraption, called Nigeria, has never known peace. Because the Moslem North decided to the opportunity to craft a radical Moslem agenda to Islamize the entire country and by extension, the whole of Africa.
Biafra is part of the then-Southern protectorate, alongside other major ethnic groups like the Yoruba. But geographically, it is located in the Eastern part of Nigeria as a country. They are mostly Igbo-speaking and have a distinct culture and identity.
Over 50 years ago, Nigeria waged a genocidal war against the Biafrans, which caught the attention of many all over the world. The war raged from July 6, 1967, to Jan 15, 1970. During this time, about 3-5 million adult Biafrans and children died in what you will consider one of the bloodiest wars in modern Africa. Most Biafrans died mainly from hunger and starvation, sparking a big humanitarian crisis. The stages and severeness of starvation in Biafra during the war cannot be compared to any other war crisis.
The war brought about food blockades, which led to intense protein shortages within the Biafra region and precipitated great malnutrition and devastation among adults and kids (Miller, 1970). The Biafra battle ranks as one of the top-notch dietary disasters of current instances, drawing big attention to the region.
Since the end of the war, Biafrans have continued to face discrimination and marginalization in Nigeria. They have been the targets of violence and persecution in Nigeria. However, In recent years, there has been a resurgence of Biafran nationalism, and many Biafrans are now calling for a referendum.
The plight of the Biafrans is a complex one. They are people who have been through a lot of suffering, and they continue to face challenges. However, they are also resilient people, and they have a strong sense of identity and community. The Biafrans are determined to achieve their goals and will continue to fight for their right to self-determination.
Here are some of the specific plights that Biafrans face in Nigeria:
- Discrimination: Biafrans are often discriminated against in Nigeria because of their ethnicity and culture. They are sometimes denied jobs, housing, and other opportunities.
- Marginalization: Biafrans are often marginalized in Nigerian politics and society. They are underrepresented in government and other positions of power.
- Violence: Biafrans have been the targets of violence and persecution in Nigeria. They have been killed, injured, and displaced from their homes.
- Persecution: Biafrans have been persecuted for their beliefs and practices. They have been arrested, detained, and tortured.
The plight of the Biafrans is a serious human rights issue. It is important to raise awareness of this issue and to call for an end to the discrimination, marginalization, violence, and persecution that Biafrans face in Nigeria.
This is why the Biafra referendum is one of the main missions of Rising Sun Charities Organization, a focused group of individuals working to ensure that the rights of Biafrans are upheld and respected in Nigeria with a final goal to secure a referendum for the people of Biafra.
