In the late 1960s, a civil war in Nigeria broke out, and it became one of the great tragedies of Africa. The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian–Biafran War or the Biafran War, is a civil war over the breakaway state of Biafra, which declared its independence from Nigeria.
This led to months of massacres against the Igbos, the ethnic group who fought for secession. Thousands of people were killed, while others estimate that two million Biafran civilians died of starvation and diseases, and about a million fled to other regions. After two and a half years, Biafra was defeated and reintegrated into Nigeria.
Today, many would regard this as an unfortunate episode best forgotten. But for the RisingSun Charities Organization, which is dedicated to the Biafra Referendum, this remains a cathartic event.
Our non-profit organization in Newark, New Jersey, is trying to imagine new ways to highlight the legacies and memories of those who suffered from this war.
The Republic of Biafra and the Biafra Genocide are part of Nigeria’s history. We believe that the effects of the war still need to be reckoned with.
Join us in our cause for the Biafra Restoration in New Jersey. Help us develop ways of engaging different publics in a conversation on Biafra. Help us resist the politics of forgetting.
