The history of Biafra is one steeped in struggles and tragedy. As advocates for the Biafra referendum and raising awareness of this conflict all across the globe, it’s important to understand the root of our cause.
- A Fight for Autonomy and Fairness
In the early 20th century, in the Eastern Region of Nigeria, the Igbo, having been through years of colonization by the British, began to fight for their right to self-rule. Visionaries like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Akanu Ibiam spearheaded this movement for greater autonomy and equitable power distribution within Nigeria.
In 1967, the Eastern Region declared independence from Nigeria. However, the Nigerian government refused to recognize the Republic of Biafra, sparking a brutal civil war that lasted over two and a half years. Tragically, millions of Biafrans perished through mass killings, starvation, and sexual violence, leading tothe Biafra genocide.
The Biafran War stands as one of Africa’s bloodiest civil conflicts. Biafra was outmanned and outgunned, leading to immense suffering and mass displacement. In 1970, Biafra surrendered to the Nigerian government, and the region was left in ruins. However, promises of Biafra restoration in New Jersey were left largely unfulfilled. What’s left today is further division and a desire to be free from the atrocities.
